Tulum travel guide and vacation resources

Tulum (sometimes Tulum Pueblo) is the largest community in the municipality of Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexico. It is located at 20.21° North, 87.46° West, on the Caribbean coast of the state, near the site of the archaeological ruins of Tulum. The community had a 2005 census population of 14,790 inhabitants. Several years ago, Tulum Pueblo was a quiet village 2 km (1.5 mi) from the archaeological site, and tourism outside of the ruins was limited to a few small shops and simple cabanas on the beach. As of 2005[update], population of Tulum Pueblo has grown to over 10,000 permanent inhabitants. Tulum Pueblo remains mostly a Mexican town, with some tourists eating in the restaurants and bars at night. The "hotel zone" of boutique hotels on the Tulum beach has grown to over 40 small hotels, most of them cabañas built in the traditional Maya style with thatched palm roofs, and a few restaurants and beach clubs. Inexpensive cabañas with hammocks are still available. Most accommodations remain rustic as electricity in the "hotel zone" is either non-existent or is generated on site. Surrounded by the jungle, archaeological mayan sites and cenotes, Tulum is one of the last spots in the caribbean where is still possible to enjoy an exuberant nature as well as unexplored beaches with white sand. This small caribbean town is ideal to escape from the gigantic malls and the huge “All Inclusive” touristic developments. Tulum still keeps, fortunately, a bohemian and rustic atmosphere that makes it ideal for adventures, exploration as well as for contacting nature but protecting it at the same time. Tulum, Mexico, is everything wonderful about the Mexican Caribbean. It's getting discovered, but the sugar white beaches are still sweetly quiet, the ocean is as clear as gin and you can get a big meal by the bus station for two bucks. And you can sleep in Tulum for pesos. If that's not enough, think open air bars and prehistoric ruins. Get here before the madding crowds find it and descend. Speaking of crowds, visit nearby ruins and parks early a.m. -- Cancun crowds are bussed in later. European and South Americans enjoy the culture and calm of the rustic nature of the area. Basic services and economical lodgings are readily available. Tulum is an ecological area where serenity abounds. The archaeological zone of Tulum is perhaps one of the most beautiful places on the Riviera Maya, combining the mystery of the ancient civilization which inhabited this zone with the singular beauty of the Caribbean Sea which bathes its shores.
